NURMIJÄRVI—After responding to reports of an armed individual on Raalantie in Nurmijärvi on Wednesday morning, the police cordoned off the area and deployed a drone for surveillance.

The suspect, a middle-aged man, decided to shoot down the drone with a shotgun and attempted to leave the cordoned area while still armed, prompting police to use their firearm.

The suspect was injured but not critically, apprehended, and taken to hospital.

As the investigation is still in its early stages, the police does not want to comment on how many shots were fired during the operation nor are the authorities disclosing where the police bullet hit.

The Helsinki Police Department is investigating, with a prosecutor reviewing the police’s use of firearms.

Police had cordoned off the area as a precaution, advising nearby school staff and students to stay indoors and asking the public to avoid the area.

Authorities clarified that the incident was related to a private residence, not the school.

By shortly after 11:00 in the morning, the police announced that their operation had concluded and began de-escalating while maintaining checks at the scene.
