Statistics Finland reports that 44,600 assaults were recorded in 2025, marking a record high and a 7% increase from the previous year.

Assaults have risen by about one-third compared to 2020.

Assaults in private homes increased by 8%, while those in public places grew by 6% from 2024.

Over the past five years, home assaults rose by one-fifth and public place assaults by nearly 45%.

In contrast, restaurant assaults have recently declined.

Aggravated assaults increased in 2025 as less serious ones decreased; aggravated cases accounted for 4%.

There were also 42 more attempted homicides than in 2024, though overall homicides declined. A record total of 423 attempted homicides or murders was documented.

Petty thefts and shoplifting also saw sharp increases shoplifting alone rose by 21% from the previous year, totaling about 76,500 cases.

Incidents of petty theft and shoplifting have grown significantly since 2022, with last year’s surge being particularly notable.
