The number of immigrants in the January-September period was the highest on record.

At the end of September, Finland’s population was 5,594,384, according to preliminary data from Statistics Finland. The population growth was driven by immigration from abroad, as there were 41,268 more immigrants than emigrants.

In January-September, 51,366 people moved to Finland from abroad and 10,098 people moved out of Finland. There were 15,174 more immigrants and 1,927 fewer emigrants than a year earlier.

The number of immigrants in the January-September period was the highest on record. Finnish citizens accounted for 5,617 of the immigrants and 6,474 of the emigrants.

Ukrainians who came to Finland under temporary protection in 2022 had the opportunity to apply for a residence permit in Finland after one year in the country. According to preliminary data, 13,905 Ukrainians were registered as immigrants in January-September 2023, which explains the increase in the number of immigrants.

The Finnish population increased by 30,414 people between January and September.

There were 10,817 fewer births than deaths.

In January-September, 32,739 children were born, 1,539 fewer than in the same period in 2022. This is the lowest number in the entire statistical history since 1900.

The number of deaths was 43,556, 2,724 fewer than the previous year.

According to preliminary data by region, the population grew in January-September in Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Varsinais-Suomi, North Ostrobothnia, Ostrobothnia, Central Finland, Pohjois-Savo, Åland and Päijät-Häme.
