Adam Sandler plays a lonely cosmonaut in outer space in Johan Renck’s ‘Spaceman.’ Luckily, he finds a friend in an alien spider, but this is not necessarily a good thing for the viewer. Photograph: Cr. Courtesy of Netflix © 2023. / Click to view the trailer.

Spaceman starring Adam Sandler lacks the energy and drive of the ‘90s titular hit song by Babylon Zoo.

So what? Sandman, helmed by TV director Johan Renck and based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Czech author Jaroslav Kalfař, is a one-man zoo in a spaceship-turned-terrarium with a giant spider that talks.

As if that weren’t enough of a turn-off, Sandler, who plays the Czech Republic’s first independent cosmonaut, Jakub Procházka, is 500 million kilometers away from Earth while dealing with marital problems on his home planet via satellite link.

His conversations with colleagues on the big blue marble are depressing, and his wife won’t take a satellite call.

While Adam Sandler is capable of serious roles, this one leaves the viewer with only one thing to say:

Stick to comedy.

‘Spaceman’ premieres March 1 on Netflix.
