On Wednesday, after opening a conference on ecologically sustainable economic policy at Little Finlandia in Helsinki where the keynote speaker was Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta—whose report emphasizing the economic importance of biodiversity has attracted wide international attention—Prime Minister Sanna Marin (the SDP), left to Washington D.C for the 68th Bilderberg Meeting.

The purpose of the meeting, according to the Finnish government, “is to foster an informal and confidential exchange of views between leading European and North American politicians, journalists, researchers, experts and business representatives.”

The agenda of the three-day forum this year include geopolitical realignments, NATO challenges, China, Indo-Pacific realignment, Sino-US tech competition, Russia, continuity of government and the economy, disruption of the global financial system, disinformation, energy security and sustainability, post-pandemic health, fragmentation of democratic societies, trade and deglobalization, and Ukraine.

The number of participants totals 120 from 21 countries, including Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, and Henry Kissinger, the former U.S. foreign minister, and also Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer, one of the companies known for their Covid-19 vaccinations.

The Bilderberg Meeting, according to their website, “is a forum for informal discussions about major issues.”

The meetings are held under the Chatham House Rule, which states that participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s) nor any other participant may be revealed.

Aside from attending the Bilderberg event in Washington, on Friday Prime Minister Marin will meet with Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

“The topics of their meeting,” according to the government, “will be Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland’s application for NATO membership, the fight against climate change, equality issues and opportunities to strengthen cooperation on the development of new technologies.”
