Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. has been elected the president of the United States on Saturday, ending Donald J. Trump’s one-term presidency.
Biden is a man who has spent time in Finland. In 2011, Biden, then vice president of the U.S., met with President Tarja Halonen. In a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, Biden praised the Finnish educational system and equality. Biden said that his 12 years old granddaughter, Finnegan, is impressed with the women’s status in Finnish politics.
During his visit, Biden also invited President Halonen for a visit to the White House.
At the beginning of his presidential campaign in November 2019 in Los Angeles, Biden took a stand on the safety of Finland.
A Finnish journalist from Lännen Media asked Biden if “Finland would be safe should Russia try something?”
“Yes,” Biden said seriously, looking straight into the reporter’s eyes.
“I have spent time in Finland,” Biden concluded.
