HERE’S THE LATEST update on the impact of Thursday’s national strike.

Trains, subways and trams will not run, which will especially affect commuters. Metro stations will remain closed, except for ticket halls with commercial space.

The strike will also affect bus services, postal services, school and kindergarten meals, cleaning and sanitation services in public areas and sports facilities.

Public transport

The following transportation services will not operate on Thursday: The following transportation services will not operate on Thursday: commuter trains, the metro, trams and light rail, almost all buses.

The following services will not run at these times:

On Wednesday night, the 15 tram and light rail will operate as normal until the end of service (approximately 2:00 in the morning.). Service will then be suspended until early morning on Friday, December 15.

Commuter rail service will be suspended beginning at 04:00 on Thursday. Service will resume early Friday morning.

Electricity

The strike will affect electricity production at several power plants across Finland.

As there is significantly less electricity on the market than usual, the Energy Industry expects the strike to affect the price of electricity on the stock exchange. However, no shortage of electricity is expected and district heating has been excluded from the strike.

Meals for children

Meals in schools and kindergartens are affected by the strike.

Meals will be provided in kindergartens, schools and colleges, the City of Helsinki announced on Wednesday. However, the menus may change.

On Thursday, the meals in schools and day care centers will be replaced by a mainly reserve food package, including snack biscuits, smoothies, juice soup, and crisp bread. Special dietary requirements will not be catered for. In the schools and kindergartens where Palmia supplies the food, it will be served as usual.

Food services in Kauniainen are also affected by the strike.

Health care

The strike can make it difficult for patients to access emergency services. In this case, it is important to seek help from relatives for transport and to wait patiently for a Kela taxi. The emergency number 112 should only be called in emergencies, representatives of the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa remind.

Postal services

The strike affects postal delivery. However, posti estimates that Thursday’s strike will not affect the timely delivery of Christmas parcels and cards, for example.

Deliveries relating to health care, for example, are excluded from the strike.

Free time

In Vantaa, the strike will close swimming pools and swimming pool gyms, ice rinks, artificial ice rinks, Lumo sports facilities, Rajatorppa rock shelter sports facilities, sports halls and other sports facilities that require staff to be open. The use of the facilities has also been canceled for Thursday.

In Vantaa, the following facilities will be open according to the opening hours: the Hakunila rock shelter, the sports facilities of the Koivukylä elderly center, the Hämeenkylä sports hall and the Rajakylä tennis center.

In Helsinki, the strike includes the National Gallery and the Kisama and Sinerbrychoff Art Museums were reported to remain closed on Thursday. The Ateneum may be open, the National Gallery said.

In the rest of Uusimaa, sports facilities in at least Järvenpää, Kerava, Tuusula and Hyvinkää are included in the strike.

Järvenpää swimming pool will be closed on Thursday, and there will be no physical education classes offered by the sports services.

Maintenance of buildings

The strike will affect, for example, the cleaning of many buildings.

What else?

Several large construction sites, harbors, industrial workplaces, bakeries, paper mills and logistics and distribution centers of large central companies are affected by the strike.
