To mark the birthday of the architect of the railway station, Eliel Saarinen, the 50-meter-high bell tower will ring for the first time ever.

Next Sunday, August 20, at 15:00, you can witness a historic moment at the Helsinki Railway Station, when the station’s bell tower will ring for the first time ever.
The tolling of the bells will honor the 150th birthday of Eliel Saarinen, the architect who designed the railway station. The 50-meter-high bell tower will ring 15 times with a specially designed sound.
The sound of the bell tower will contain a traditional “but surprising sound,” the government-owned railway company, VR, noted in a statement.
“Tuomas Skopa, the composer of the bells’ sound, has been inspired by the same sources that Saarinen himself used for his own creations,” Jani Jääskeläinen, a project manager at VR Group, said in the statement.
The sources Jääskeläinen is referring to include Jean Sibelius and Oskar Merikanto, who were Saarinen’s favorite composers. “This is a meaningful moment that is well worth experiencing on the spot,” Jääskeläinen said in the statement.
