“When cycling, you are obliged to give way on a zebra crossing if there is no cycle path extension,” Dennis Pasterstein, a chief inspector and the director of the traffic control department of the Helsinki Police Department, said on messaging service X.

Chief Inspector Pasterstein continued:

“Failed to demonstrate clearly and in good time his intention to comply with his obligation to give way by reducing speed or stopping. Stopped on the crosswalk. Traffic offence fine of €40.”

In Finland, cyclists must give way to moving vehicles on the road, per se, when they approach a zebra crossing from a cycleway while riding the bike.

Cycle-only crossings are an exception. They are designated with two white dashed lines.

Therefore, Pasterstein recommends leading a bicycle when passing through a zebra crossing.
