A walk in downtown Helsinki on Wednesday morning gives a clue of what’s coming: the weather’s about to turn cold.

“Very cold weather is arriving in Finland from the east and the north. On Wednesday, and especially on Thursday, strong winds from the northeast will make the freezing weather even stronger,” said meteorologist Anna Latvala of weather service Foreca.

The mercury may in the southern parts drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius by the end of the week.

The recent monthly weather forecast predicts milder weather for the weekend or early next week. “At the same time, the wind will get stronger and more snow will come,” Latvala said.
