The vacation is over for some upper secondary schoolers, who are now confined in their warm classrooms while watching the sun beaming through the windows. (For all upper secondary shoolers, the term begins next week at the latest.) The thick book of algebra feels unusually heavy to open. “A stuffy classroom during the heat in the end of the summer is absolutely the last place on Earth to spark motivation to study,” Pietu Heiskanen, chairman of The Union of Upper Secondary School Students, said in a bulletin.
On the other hand, if the algebra lesson would be moved outside, the gentle summer breeze loftily turning the pages, it would absolutely, according to Heiskanen, increase the motivation to study. The union stresses that according to the basic principles of the curriculum in the upper secondary school, the learning environment should be diverse and enrich the experiences that improve the study motivation.
According to the law, comprehensive school and upper secondary must end on May 29 at the earliest and on June 5 at the latest. The law doesn’t state when the school should begin. It’s left to municipalities to decide.
In the ‘60s, school started in the beginning of September. “These days, there is no need for a vacation to pick up potatoes but that time was otherwise better!” Heiskanen said and continued, “We should absolutely make good use of the environment of the school establishment, whether it’s built or part of nature.”
