President Sauli Niinistö talked with the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday.

The discussed topics included relations between Finland and the United States, Russia, and the Arctic Council whose presidency will be transferred from the United States to Finland in spring 2017.

President Niinistö and Trump also discussed Finland’s independence jubilee year in 2017, the centenary, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Finnish independence.


Trump asked Niinistö to extend his greetings to Finland, saying that “the Finns are great people.”

President Niinistö replied to Trump on Twitter: “Thank you for a great discussion. Until next time!” said President Niinistö.
