OULU – The Oulu Police Department has begun preliminary investigations on four new suspicions of sexual crimes that have targeted under 15-year-old girls.
The police are investigating a rape, aggravated sexual abuse and sexual abuse. The acts happened during summer 2018.
According to the police, four people are involved. Two of the suspects are about 20 years old, and two persons are under 18.
Three men have been arrested for probable cause.
Rumors have been spreading across the Internet that one of the victims, a girl 14, committed suicide at the end of October last year.
In a statement relating to the latest suspicions, the police confirm that one of the victims has, indeed, passed away last autumn.
“We are not suspecting a crime in relation to the [victim’s] death,” the police said in the statement and added that no further information will be published in relation to the incident.
Oulu, commonly known as the capital of Northern Scandinavia, and located about 610 kilometers in the north of Helsinki, started making headlines last December in relation to a rush of sexual crimes committed by men with a foreign background. The crimes happened in late autumn.
It began with suspicions of several men, aged 20-30, with a foreign background, sexually abusing an underage girl. The types of crimes were aggravated child abuse and aggravated rape.
Seven men were arrested. One man escaped to Germany but was caught by the German police after a picture of him was published. Then he was released before being transported to Finland because of an error in communications with the Finnish law enforcement.
The National Bureau of Investigation decided to put him on Europol’s Most Wanted list. He was caught again in Germany on January 2, 2019, and will be transported to Finland in January.
The man is suspected of aggravated child abuse and aggravated rape.
In addition to the previously described offenses, the police are investigating four other sexual crime cases in the Oulu region, all involving men of foreign backgrounds, and all involving underage girls as victims.
A total of 16 males are suspected in the series of sexual crimes.
UPDATE JANUARY 13: The number of suspects is now 16.
