The week for skiing vacation starts in sunny weather and will continue so most of the week, according to the Finnish Meteorological institute.

About 300,000 students from southwestern Finland, Satakunta, Uusimaa and Åland region go on skiing vacation.

In total, during the upcoming three weeks, as the date for the vacation varies regionally, the vacation is celebrated by about 800,000 pupils.

Somewhat 114,000 citizens involved in working life held their winter vacation in February last year and the number is expected to remain close to the same.

This week, about 6,500 vacationers are flying abroad through Finnmatkat, the largest travel arranger in Finland, holding a market share of about 30 per cent.

Aurinkomatkat flies no fewer than 300,000 vacationers abroad with favourite destinations being Phuket, Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

A number of over 100,000 Finnish travellers are expected in Lapland this year; last February about 113,040 vacationers spent their night under the northern lights.
