A FINNISH MOTHER and her child were caught in an avalanche in Pallas on January 2, 2024, after a skiing trip in the Pallastunturi area.

The mother was found dead under the avalanche on Tuesday, and the child was found dead today, on Thursday, at about 11:30 in the morning near where the mother was found earlier: Pyhäkuru—according to the Lapland Police Department.

“It is unlikely that the events following the emergency call will be fully clarified, but the very bad weather conditions combined with an avalanche seem to have caused this sad and unusual accident in Finland,” Detective Inspector Kirsi Huhtamäki, the head of the investigation, said in a statement.

The police continue to investigate the cause of death, which is confidential.

Police are still at the scene of the search in Pyhäkuru and ask outsiders to avoid the area.
