The Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa (HUS) will immediately start giving the third jab of the coronavirus vaccine. This is to prevent more than 15,000 Moderna vaccines to reach their expiry date on September 22.

HUS noted in a statement on Friday that the first in line to get the third jab are people with immunodeficiency. The third shot will also be available for hospital personnel who are treating coronavirus patients; those who received the first two doses early in the year.

The decision to start giving third doses was decided within the regional coordination group in Uusimaa, where HUS and other municipalities decided to take action before the government has issued an official decree on the matter. (According to the statement, they have received permission to start the third round of vaccines from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.)
