It’s that time of the year when the students go amok of both: the booze and the mood; this country doesn’t know a crazier student party than the May Day celebration. People revell across the continents but the biggest parties are found in the capital where the Havis Amanda statue stands at the Market square, tall and naked.
The crowning of Amanda is a tradition old as the street but this year the student union responsible for the crowning promises to deliver the student cap on the sculptures curls with a spectacle never seen before.
“Manta will be crowned in a unique way!” Rosa Nylén, the culture chief of Aalto University Student Union (AYY), said in a bulletin.
Because AYY is a young student union they are not carrying the weight of the history on their shoulders.
“The traditions are nice, but they need to be renewed. We want to do things in our own way,” Nylén said.
The cap has already travelled from a student party to another and from the hands of a mayor to another (there’s even a blog documenting its movements) and today the cap will arrive at the Market square in the May Day march which starts from Hietalahti square (Hietalahdentori) and from the front of the KY building at the Pohjoinen Rautatienkatu at 16:00.
Amanda will be washed at 17:00 and crowned at 18:00. The cap will be delivered to the student union through air. With a plane or a crane? That remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, take a look at the highlights from the May Day celebration last year.
