One person has died to coronavirus (COVID-19) in Finland, reports the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and THL. This is the first reported death caused by the coronavirus in Finland.
According to THL, the victim was an elderly person, who passed away on Friday, March 20.
President Sauli Niinistö expressed his condolences in a statement on Saturday. “At the same time, this is a clear indication the corona epidemic is shifting to another, more serious phase. I wish strength to the relatives of the perished,” Niinistö said.
According to THL, there are now 521 coronavirus infections in Finland that have been verified in the laboratory. On Friday Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District reported 53 new coronavirus infections—the largest number of infections so far confirmed in a single day.
