Taking a taxi from the airport of arrival to the final destination at some airports is an expensive affair, according to the summer 2019 study of taxi fares at European airports, conducted by travel website AirMundo.
Airports in London and Milan are by far the most expensive.
In Finland, the average cost of traveling from Helsinki Airport to the center is 45 euros.
The study compares the taxi rates at the 50 busiest airports in Europe. Prices of pre-booked taxis are not included in the comparison. In the report, Finland ranks 15th.
According to the study, in Europe, travelers pay an average of 40 euros for a taxi ride from the airport to the city center.
But travelers taking the taxi at airports in London (Stansted, Luton, Gatwick) and Milan (Bergamo, Malpensa) commonly have to pay 100 euros for a taxi ride to downtown.
This amount is 10 times higher than the price at airports in Bucharest and Warsaw, where the airport taxi typically costs between nine and ten euros to the city center.
The top five most expensive airports to continue a journey by taxi are Milan Bergamo Airport (105 EUR), London Stansted Airport (104 EUR / 95 GBP), London Luton Airport (99 EUR / 90 GBP), Milan Malpensa Airport (95 EUR) and London Gatwick Airport (EUR 93 / GBP 85).
The unfavorable location of these airports, at a great distance from the city center, plays an important role.
Milan Bergamo Airport (Ryanair), London Stansted Airport (Ryanair) and London Luton Airport (easyJet and Wizz Air) are mainly used by low-cost carriers.
According to the study, however, they are also the most expensive to take a taxi from. Travelers who are only guided by the prices of airline tickets will be disappointed here. Chances are that a taxi ride to the hotel in the center costs more than the flight. Booking a taxi in advance is a way to reduce the cost of taking a taxi to and from London airports.
In Europe, the average price for a taxi ride from the airport to the city center is 40 euros for a journey of 34 minutes. Compared to half a year ago, only the taxi fares at the airports of Istanbul have risen. Travelers should bear in mind that, in practice, few taxi drivers at Istanbul New Airport and Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen Airport adhere to the official rates.
The price level at airports in Eastern Europe is much lower. At Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport (11 EUR / 67 TRY), Bucharest Henri Coanda Airport (10 EUR / 45 RON), Warsaw Airport (9 EUR / 40 PLN) and Antalya Airport (8 EUR / 48,50 TRY) a taxi ride from the airport to the center of the city costs only 10 euros.
Taxi fares are 10 times cheaper than the prices at the most expensive airports.
