Goodness me, I’m not sure what is more tiresome, bigotry or the fact that I keep having to write about it.
In an act with about as much class as school on Christmas Day, a mob of alabandical “patriots” decided they would intimidate some very vulnerable families, waste police time and embarrass the country they seem so proud of.
Recently in Lahti we have seen an angry anti-asylum seeker protest with participants acting like 19th century pitchfork brandishing rural Carpathian peasantry, drunk on fear, hate and cheap grog.
Of course you can’t really blame Carpathian peasantry of old for their pitchfork brandishing ways, their actions were kind of justified by the fact they were dealing with a murderous Vampiric prince of darkness.
In Lahti the mob was out to greet some asylum seekers (oh the horror!) most of them fleeing violence from Iraq. Their way of greeting them was by hurling abuse, rocks and fireworks, which, not to belittle the wretched actions of these morons, seems a little pathetic considering that a lot of the asylum seekers have had to put up with violent regime change, Operation Shock and Awe, Desert Storm, the Iraq War, al-Qaida, Isis, Saddam and the Iran-Iraq war – and that is only the last 35 years of their history.
It wasn’t just the asylum seekers that were in receipt of this barrage of dumb-arse-ry, it was also Finnish Red Cross workers, a group whose indomitable bravery and selflessness amplifies the fimetic attitude of these protestors.
Amongst the mob was one adorned in a hastily crafted uniform of universally reviled religious terrorist organisation the KKK, a group responsible for thousands of cases of murder, rape, torture, kidnap and other wholesome acts of atrocity. Acts I presume, the protester would rather affiliate with his country instead of the compassionate act of sheltering the vulnerable.

I’d also like to add that the KKK membership is 100 per cent immigrant, so I don’t know how that resonates with this chap’s ethos on migration, although requesting an ethos from someone dressed up as a Pound Shop Grand Cyclops is probably asking too much. I find it absurdly incongruous to see this behaviour in a country that boasts one of the best education systems in the world, what a waste.
After some extremely lax ticking offs from government leaders Timo Soini, the foreign minister, reassured everybody that it was disgraceful that there was a person dressed in a KKK outfit whilst holding a Finnish flag. I’m not sure if that means he’d rather it was a Peruvian flag or some sort of nautical flag or maybe he didn’t mind the bigoted protest and the flag, just the costume.
I guess Soini has to tread carefully when issuing statements regarding these actions, he doesn’t want to “bite the hand” and so forth, but this is the sad reality of right-wing populism, it sort of gives carte blanche to the crazies to act, well, crazy.

Rght-wing politics champions confirmation bias, leaving little to no room for progressive thought or empathy. On the left side of politics it can be quite embarrassing hearing fellow comrades being overly optimistic, happy-clappy and lovey-dovey from time to time, but how do the right maintain any sort of semblance of credibility when all they can do is talk about getting rid of anyone they don’t like whilst their supporters get drunk and attack people.
The national hockey team Leijonat is so embarrassed by this political grassroots bowel movement it has pleaded with bigots to refrain from wearing their kit to marches!
As I mentioned in my previous column, things are actually getting better in the grand scale of things, we as people, as a global community, are adapting and slowly improving as a species.

There will always be those who are left behind, those who didn’t get the memo about “not being a total cretin”. As we make advances their views will be ever more sidelined and balked at, and in their withering responses I expect they will be scleroticly defiant and occasionally lash out.
These are people that refuse to change. It is not possible to defeat this kind of bigotry, but judging by the nous of their actions we won’t have to, it’ll probably be eating toast in the bath or drinking paint thinner that will.
