Ambulance is Michael Bay (Bad Boys (1995), The Rock (1996), Armageddon (1998), Transformers (2007)) at his best.

In this one, Bay’s auteurism is on another level. He creates hair-pulling suspense by utilizing low angles, saturated colors and shooting against the light to a pulsating, electrifying rhythm. If you thought a two-hour ambulance chase could be boring, think again.

It should be noted that Bay’s craft is based on a 2005 Danish thriller Ambulancen, which screenwriter Chris Fedak (Prodigal Son, Chuck) revamped for Bay.

The two different versions don’t look much alike, what do you think?

Ambulance, however, is not all about Bay. Jake Gyllenhaal (Southpaw (2015), Everest (2015) Life (2017) plays one of his most memorable roles as off-the-hinge crazy Danny Sharp, the leader of the bank heist.

His brother, Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), is not bad either as the driver with high stakes in the chase, even if Abdul-Mateen II has not played in many movies before this.

The unforgettable glue that holds the pieces together is the character of Eiza Gonzalez, nurse Cam Thompson.

It’s also always great to see bad guys on point, like A Martinez as Papi. (Papi’s Special! I told you.)

Ambulance certainly is one of the best action movies this year.

‘Ambulance’ plays in cinemas now.
