The strike of Railway Union Finland (RAU) will halt train traffic from Monday until further notice.
The government-owned railway company, VR, will cancel all long-distance and commuter trains from Monday, March 20, at 00:01, and continue until further notice. This also includes the commuter trains operated by the Helsinki Regional Transport Authority (HSL).
The train drivers’ strike is linked to the current collective agreement negotiations between Service Sector Employers (PALTA) and the Railway Union Finland (RAU), which failed on Sunday.
The negotiating parties have agreed that they won’t reveal details of the negotiations to the public at this stage.
“Negotiations between Service Sector Employers PALTA and RAU will continue during the strike. We hope that an agreement will be reached soon. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this strike will cause our customers,” Laura Ansaharju, the senior vice president of human resources at VR, said in a statement.
According to VR, “We will automatically refund the price of single tickets purchased for long-distance and commuter traffic during the strike within about a week.”
Buses, trams, the metro and the Suomenlinna ferry will run as usual and according to their regular timetables during the strike. It is likely, according to HSL, that “buses and other public transport vehicles will get crowded.”
