A girl, 3, went missing from her home yard at 9:30 on Sunday morning in Turenki, a community in Janakkala, located in southern Finland about 100 kilometres from Helsinki.

She was out with her puppy of mixed breed.

In the evening she was found drowned in Hiidenjoki, a river, located only two kilometres from her home. The dog was found dead too.

“This is horrible. The river is always unfrozen during this time of the year when the current is strong,” a local said in an interview for MTV News.

“I wish strength to the parents.”

According to MTV, dozens of candles illuminated the bridge above the river early on Sunday evening.

About 100 volunteers joined the search during the day. In addition, the border patrol joined the search with a helicopter. A boat and many snowmobiles participated the search as well.

The police are not suspecting a crime, but are now investigating the cause of death.
