PORI

This is the scene at Kirjurinluoto, the central river-island park, where the Pori Jazz Festival is in full swing. Friday delivered the sunniest weather of the weekend, a stark contrast to Saturday, which saw the grounds soaking in rain. Yet, the elements could not dampen the spirits or the sounds; this Friday gallery captures that incredible music—from deep experimental jazz textures to groovy Motown soul—alongside the lively, candid moments of the crowd.

SML, or Small Medium Large, is an LA-based experimental jazz supergroup that does not spend much time playing together. Yet on Lokkilava (Seagull Stage) they found coherence in cacophony, pleasing their sun-soaked audience with layers of Afrobeat, bleeps and powerful saxophone overtones. Here synth artist Jeremiah Chiu and saxophonist Josh Johnson share a palpable moment of synergy. Photograph: TONY ÖHBERG/FINLAND TODAY
